How to Build a Winter Snowman

You don't need a magic wand to create magical memories in the winter months. You just need a snowstorm and some imagination. Snowmen are one of the magical seasonal icons of winter, Christmas and the holidays. Snowmen are so popular that the most well-known one of all, Frosty, is as recognized a name as Elvis.

Making a snowman is easy but first you need a snowstorm. You need the snowflakes to fall from the sky and create what is technically known in the snowman building world as good packing snow. If you can make a snowball you can make a snowman. The great thing about making snowmen is that there are no rules.

The most popular snowmen have three circular body parts - head, upper torso, lower torso - progressively bigger from top to bottom. But there are two circle snowmen and snowmen of a variety of sizes and shapes. And speaking of snowmen, there are also snowwomen.

After you have the frame of your snowman built it's time to make him (or her) come to life with eyes, nose, mouth and other accessories. You can make your snowman's face using sticks, twigs, rocks, leaves, branches, carrots, fruit, coal or candy. Whatever you can find around the yard or in your house. Add arms, a hat, a scarf, a pipe, a pocket book - anything you like.

Remember, Frosty the Snowman had a "Corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal."

Once your snowman is built you will want to name him or her - every snowman should have a name after all. And don't forget to take pictures of your new winter friend. You now have a snowman who will make you smile for miles for as long as the cold temperature keeps them in tact.

If you can't make a real snowman because you live somewhere it doesn't snow, you can make your own snowman with snowman craft kits or snowman projects. If you have a pad and a pen you can draw a snowman. If you have colored paper and scissors you can cut out a paper collage snowman. If you have cookie mix and decorative sprinkles you can bake a snowman. If you have yarn and needle you can stitch a snowman.

One fun snowman craft is to make a dry pasta snowman. You'll need different shape dry pasta, glue and paper. Place your canvas or paper on the tabletop. Arrange the pasta shapes to create a snowman. Once you like what you see, glue the pasta pieces to the paper. Let it dry. Voila - pasta snowman.

Surround yourself with snowmen of all kinds to light up your holidays and to bring cheer throughout the winter!
